During the World Wars US civilians had Victory Gardens. The civilian Victory Gardens allowed for the large production foods to be sent to the troops without having food shortages at the home front. It was also encouraged to can and store your harvests for the following winter.
Today with all the talk of food shortages and then the destruction of so many channels of food happening it sure looks like a good time to bring back the Victory Gardens.
You don’t need a lot of space, or to grow all your food from your garden. Just growing a few items will help alleviate some pressure from the national food supply. You could even partner up with a family member/friend/neighbor and each grow a few plants and share between y’all. A few plants produce a lot more food than you’d think!
You do want to grow a whole big garden? Great! You can sell at your local farmers market, have a vegetable stand, donate to food pantries (this may be trickery because not all pantries will take perishables and/or homegrown goods) and the many other ways to put your fresh food to use.
Also from your garden you can preserve your food for use at a later time (without all preservatives that you get with store bought foods - added bonus IMO). You can freeze, can, dry, etc; there are many ways to preserve and keep food.
